    Branch Bracing

Do you have any branches or low-hanging limbs on your trees located on your property? Branch bracing may be a necessary measure for you to maintain safety of your property not only for your trees – but for any nearby structures or pedestrians as well. Tree bracing reduces the movement of branches, leaders, and the entire tree. This supplemental support for weak areas of the tree protects your trees, people, and your property.

The most common risk of tree breakage is codominant stems. This occurs when there are v-shaped branches that split off from the main trunk in two different directions. These stems are structurally weaker than a single stem. Greater angles in the codominant stem are more susceptible to breakage. If one of the stems is not removed early on in the tree’s life, bracing may be your only option in strengthening the weak area of your tree.

Another risky condition in trees that would potentially require branch bracing is long, over-extended branches. These branches typically extend downward or horizontally, and have more concentrated leaves and twigs at the end of the branch. If early pruning was not done when the tree was younger, bracing could be your best bet for mitigating risk.

Bracing rods are used to hold together structurally weak branches with either through-rods or a dead-end configuration. Proper configurations decided are dependent upon the size and weak points of the tree. Typically, brace rods are accompanied by at least one cable for additional support. It is also best for a certified arborist to routinely check the structural integrity of branch bracing support systems. This ensures that they are functioning efficiently and keeping people and your property safe.
