    Remedial Pruning

Remedial pruning, or corrective pruning, is a technique of taking care of your trees by removing dead, weak, diseased, or unsafe branches to enhance the health of your trees. This type of pruning proactively prolongs the life of your tree and concurrently removes risk of breakage or weakening. This type of pruning is good for your trees and the overall landscape of your property as well.

Pruning dead or diseased branches in your tree allows for more light and nutrients to reach the healthy, growing parts of your tree. It can also help thin-out canopies to allow more light and air circulation to reach the interior of the tree. Too many branches crowding your canopy results in competition over light; some branches get more sun exposure than others. Too many branches in a tree can also lead to weakened structure resulting in damage or limbs falling. This poses a risk not only to your tree, but to people and structures near it as well.

Taking care of damaged, diseased, or weak trees begins with thoughtful evaluation. Some of the things that professional arborists evaluate include: identifying the species of tree, what kind of damage is hindering its growth, and what kinds of pruning techniques will encourage healthy, strong growth in the future. Trees with pre-existing damage are more vulnerable to the consequences of improper remedial pruning than already-healthy trees. This is why it is such a delicate form of tree care.

Remedial pruning is more than just cutting branches off of and hoping for the best. There are strategies and considerations that must be made to keep the safety and growth potential of trees priority. For example, using high-quality tools to not damage the tree or leave wounds vulnerable to infestation or disease. Cleaning tools to not spread disease from branch to branch and making precise cuts that are thoughtfully placed are also considerations weighed. Improper cuts that expose the wood of a tree or kill the bark leave trees vulnerable to disease or infestation. Proper pruning and treatment protect trees and promote faster healing.

Some of the decisions surrounding proper tree pruning and care are best made by a certified arborist instead of an everyday handyman. While anyone can cut branches off of a tree with tree clippers or chainsaws, only certified arborists like ours here at Dynamic Arborist can do these tasks with precision and educated decision making.
