Stump Cutting
Have you felled a tree on your property and are left with an unsightly stump? Or have you had some tree damage from severe weather and need help cleaning up the remaining stump? There are many ways to cut and remove tree stumps, including grinding, burning, using chemical herbicides, or taking a more manual approach.
Stump cutting is a manual approach to removing tree stumps from your property. This method includes using a chainsaw to cut the tree stump into pieces, and digging them out with some kind of digging bar or shovel. As always, it is imperative that you use safety equipment to guard yourself – especially safety goggles.
First, you will need to dig up the dirt surrounding the tree stump using a shovel. This will give you better accessibility to the stump, and clear away any debris that could get caught in your chainsaw. You will then want to use your chainsaw to get the stump as close to ground level as possible. One thing that is not necessary, but could help with cutting is drilling holes tightly across the stump. This will help prevent the blade from getting stuck.
Once your stump is close to grade level (and you’ve drilled holes, if you choose to), you will cut a cross-cross pattern across the face of the stump. These cuts will need to reach four to six inches below ground level. You can remove these as they loosen-up. Be aware of the placement and angle of your chainsaw when doing this. Improper use can damage the chain on your chainsaw and obviously won’t get the stump out completely.
You can also use a splitting wedge to help you break the stump into pieces. This method is also pretty hands-on. You will first centre the splitting wedge in the middle of the stump, with the goal of breaking it into two pieces. This will make burning easier if you decide to burn, and will create gaps that make cutting easier with your chainsaw.
